Generally they are triggered only in response to actions performed by the user, for example, when accessing a secure area of a website.
b) Functional Cookies:
They are cookies par excellence, since they allow the website to store information about the user, allowing the website to memorize the way in which the user likes the website to work. A classic example of a situation where functional cookies would be present would be when the user accepts the cookies and privacy policy or even the “terms and conditions of use” of a website and the website memorizes this option, having it fulfilled in subsequent access.
c) Analytic and performance cookies:
They are usually third-party cookies, that is, those who host the website. Their function is to collect information about the use of the website and the profile of its users. Also, it monitors website performance, collecting anonymous data on the number of visitors, the geographic location from which the website is being accessed, the gender and age of the users, the number of pages visited and the time users stayed in each of them.
d) Marketing and advertising cookies:
These may be cookies from third parties or from the controller. They service ads or offers, the content of which can be personalized. The purpose is to trace a profile of users' interests, thereby triggering the generation of relevant advertisements.
Although they do not store personal data, they may trigger a unique identifier for the user's browser or device to access the world wide web. As explained above, the information obtained may be shared with third parties for remarketing strategies.
Marketing and advertising cookies originating from business partners of the owner of a website are not under the control of this owner. Marketing and advertising cookies have the advantage of targeting user preferences, making the use of a given web service more efficient. As a disadvantage, such cookies can cause visual pollution and a decrease in navigation efficiency. In some cases, marketing and advertising cookies are essential for the website to function, such as on e-commerce sites.
In addition to being classified according to their purpose, cookies can also be classified according to:
a) their retention time in the browser, in persistent (or long-term) or transient (or session) cookies: Transient Cookies disappear when the browser is closed, something that does not occur with persistent cookies, since the latter are stored even after closing and restarting the browser. Persistent cookies can be programmed with a specific expiration date;
b) to their originator, in first-party or third-party cookies: first-party cookies are triggered by the developer/owner of the website you are using. Third-party cookies are originated and managed by other companies, such as service providers and commercial or business partners of the website owner.
